The Need
In the Khumbu region, at altitudes above 3,500 meters, access to healthcare is a matter of life and death. The nearest hospital is a three-day walk away, and during monsoon season or heavy snowfall, communities are completely cut off from medical services.
The existing health post lacks critical infrastructure: no reliable power source for refrigerating vaccines and medications, no emergency oxygen for altitude sickness cases, and insufficient training for staff to handle complex medical emergencies.
Last year alone, four preventable deaths occurred due to lack of emergency oxygen and refrigerated medications. Children miss vaccinations because the clinic cannot maintain proper storage temperatures. Pregnant women face unnecessary risks during childbirth without adequate medical support.
