The Need
Five villages in Solukhumbu rely on unprotected natural springs for drinking water. During monsoon season, these springs become contaminated with surface runoff, leading to waterborne diseases. Children and women spend hours each day collecting water from distant sources.
Waterborne illnesses are the leading cause of child mortality in these communities. Families boil water when they can afford fuel, but many cannot. The time spent collecting water prevents children from attending school and women from engaging in income-generating activities.
Climate change is making water sources less reliable, with some springs drying up completely during dry seasons. Communities need protected, year-round water sources to ensure health and enable development.
